What is ECE104?

Regulation ECE104 is the European regulation which sets the minimum requirements for retroreflective marking tapes for vehicles which are typically used for transportation of goods. The regulation provides guidelines for retroreflective line or contour markings of heavy goods vehicles and their trailers, allowing other motorists extra time to react when approaching an HGV at night or in poor visibility conditions.

The colour of the tapes must comply with local regulations, which in some cases require yellow to the side and red to the rear. In other cases it requires either yellow or white throughout the whole vehicle.

From 10th July 2011 it is a mandatory requirment that conspicuity markings are fitted to goods vehicles with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5t and trailers with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 3.5t.
Exact layout of the tape will depend on the design and intended use of the vehicle. Technical details are contained in European regulations on vehicle lights, paragraph 6.21 of UNECE Regulation 48.03.
